Should you be using your facebook status to raise awareness for a cause?
So…. apparently it’s that time of year where fake Facebook statuses abound, all in the name of awareness.
I’ll cut to the chase and say it bluntly: I don’t do that. I am of the old fashioned mindset that if you want to raise awareness for something, you talk about the thing you want to raise awareness about, instead of posting things that have absolutely nothing to do with what you’re supposedly raising awareness for.
That being said, let’s talk about breast cancer awareness, since that’s a recent one I’ve seen.
I won’t post a heart emoji as my Facebook status, but I do have some things to say about breast cancer awareness.
Ladies, you really, really need to check yourself regularly. Seriously. If you don’t know how to do a breast exam, here’s a link to how to do one.
I’ve got a lump, and let me tell you that it wasn’t a fun thing to find. But if you find one, don’t think that it will go away if you ignore it. Get in and get it checked out right away.
With mine, I ended up having to have a biopsy since it changed in size, and that is something you truly want to avoid. For reals. I could tell you about it– and maybe I will sometime– but it wasn’t a pleasant experience.
And here’s the kicker. I have a lump– still there– about the size of a grape. At my last annual exam, you want to know something interesting? The doctor didn’t even mention that lump.
I purposely didn’t say anything about the lump (and it wasn’t the person that I had initially gone to when dealing with it, so they didn’t know it was there), because I wanted to see if they would notice. And they didn’t notice it. The size of a grape!
If I hadn’t been doing my own self checking, that could have been cancer that got missed.
So there’s my breast cancer awareness rant for you. I won’t repost a silly or vague Facebook status. I won’t message women and tell them to NOT tell anyone what the status is about. But I WILL tell you about breast cancer awareness for real. Because that’s how we spread awareness, not by these crazy status games.
And btw, if you play the status game thing, I still love you I just don’t agree with it as in any way beneficial. Consider posting a Facebook status that will actually raise awareness for a cause instead of just making your friends confused.
